Statement by H.E. Mr. Edi Yusup, Deputy Permanent Representative of Indonesia at the 14th Session of the Working Group on Universal Periodic Review – Consideration of the UPR Report of Guatemala

Madam President,

My delegation would like to welcome the delegation of Guatemala and thank them for their comprehensive national report and continued engagement in the UPR process.

Indonesia commends the Government of Guatemala for the inclusive national reporting process, involving all respective governmental institutions, the representative of civil society, as well as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. This will result in a more accurate diagnosis of the human rights situation nationwide that, in turn, will lead to the establishment of a comprehensive roadmap.

Madam President,

Indonesia commends the Government of Guatemala for prioritizing the issue of prevention of violence against women and recommends the Government expedite its on-going efforts in developing comprehensive strategies, plans, programmes and projects with a view to improve the protection of women in Guatemala.

We share the importance of the presence of human rights institutions outside the capital city and recommend the Government of Guatemala to continue its efforts in strengthening the institutional human rights system through decentralization process, in particular by establishing a number of governmental human rights institutions in all its region.

To conclude, Madam President, as fellow developing country, Indonesia shares the view that efforts to promote sustainable development with social inclusion and fulfilment of human rights will provide the path to a more equal, just and peaceful society. Indonesia would like to offer its best wishes to the Government of Guatemala and its people in their future endeavours towards that noble objective.

I thank you.
