Indonesia welcomes the draft resolution L.35 on the Protection of the Family, which focuses on the role of family, in supporting the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities.
We recognize that the draft resolution reaffirms our commitment to ensure the protection of the family as a natural and fundamental unit of the society, in accordance with the international human rights laws, as well as to promote its sustainability and preservation.
Indonesia fully supports important elements in the draft resolution which address the role and the potential of the family in supporting the rights of persons with disabilities, the challenges facing their family, right of persons with disabilities to family life, measures to empower family to advance the rights of its members with disabilities as well as means and ways to protect the members with disabilities from any violations and abuses including in a family setting.
The promotion and protection of the family and people with disabilities are guaranteed in Indonesia’s constitution. In this regards, various measures to support and protect the family and persons with disabilities have been taken. These include the implementation of Law No 52 of 2009 on Population and Family Development and Law No. 8 of 2016 on the rights of People with Disabilities.
Family is also clearly defined in our law as a fundamental unit in society that has an important role in contributing to our national development. To promote the role of family, the Government of Indonesia commemorates the National Family Day every 29 June.
While commending the work of the core group in accommodating several inputs during informal consultations of this resolution and underlining the important of this resolution for promoting and protecting the rights of the family, my delegation hopes that this resolution can be adopted by consensus without any amendments.
I thank you.
