STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA DURING THE ADOPTION OF THE REPORT OF WORKING GROUP ON THE UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW OF SURINAME
My delegation would like to extend its appreciation to the Delegation of Suriname for its constructive engagement in the second UPR cycle.
Indonesia welcomes Suriname’s continuous efforts in strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights and commends the policies adopted in narrowing the inequality gaps to improve education, health and socioeconomic conditions in the country.
Indonesia notes with appreciation the acceptance of our recommendations to further improve access to all levels of education, including in rural areas and the strengthening of the national legal framework to combat torture by considering the accession of the Convention against Torture.
At the same time, we also note that our recommendation on the ratification of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW) could not be supported due to further national consultation and modification of legislation and policies. Thus, in the future, Indonesia encourages Suriname to continue taking initial steps towards the ratification of the ICRMW.
Finally, Indonesia supports the Council’s adoption of Suriname’s UPR Report and wishes the people and Government of Suriname success in implementing all its accepted recommendations.
