STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF INDONESIA AT THE 22ND SESSION OF THE UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW WORKING GROUP – CONSIDERATION OF THE NATIONAL REPORT OF PANAMA

Mr. President,

My delegation thanks the delegation of Panama, led by H.E. Mr. Luis Ernesto Carles, Minister of Labour and Labour Market Development of Panama for their national report.

We welcome the fact that the report is a result of an inclusive dialogue involving a wide range of ministries, agencies, parliamentarians, academics, human rights experts and civil societies organization.

Indonesia appreciates the continued commitment of the Government of Panama to advance the promotion and protection of human rights in the country including through the establishment of Ombudsman Office and National Human Rights Standing Commission.

Mr. President,

Indonesia commends the efforts taken by the Government of Panama in improving migration policy and combating trafficking in persons. While welcoming the ratification of the Government Panama to United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the three Protocols supplementing the Convention, my delegation recommends Panama to continue its efforts to ensure a comprehensive approach to migrant workers’ rights.by considering its accession to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families.

Indonesia appreciates the Government of Panama ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment as well as the establishment a national mechanism for the prevention of torture. In this regard, we recommend Panama to continue its efforts for the full implementation of the UN Convention against Torture.

To conclude, Mr. President, Indonesia would like to offer its best wishes to the Government and people of Panama in their future endeavors towards the promotion of human rights at all levels.
