STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA DURING THE ADOPTION OF THE REPORT OF WORKING GROUP ON THE UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW OF LAO PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC

June 25, 2015 Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues

Mr. President,

My delegation would like to extend its appreciation to the Delegation of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, a fellow ASEAN Member, for its constructive engagement in the second cycle of the UPR.

Indonesia commends the Government of Lao PDR for their continuous commitment in advancing the promotion and protection of human rights, including through the implementation of the Anti-Corruption Law, and hope its efforts in combatting corruption can provide exemplary measures in ASEAN and throughout the region. Indonesia views that preventive measures such as anti-corruption education and capacity-building activities can create awareness on the negative impacts of corruption.

Mr. President,

Indonesia expresses its appreciation to Lao PDR for accepting our recommendation to speed-up the drafting of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law. At the same time, we recognize that our recommendation on the ratification of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW) was noted due to limited time and resources in assessing its implementation. Thus, in the future, Indonesia encourages Lao PDR to continue taking necessary initial steps towards the ratification of the ICRMW.

Finally, Indonesia recommends that the Council adopts the Report of the Working Group on the UPR of Lao PDR. We wish the people and Government of Lao PDR success in implementing all its accepted recommendations.

Thank you.
