STATEMENT BY DELEGATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA DURING THE ADOPTION OF REPORT OF WORKING GROUP OF THE UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW OF MYANMAR *

March 17, 2016 Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues

Mr. President,

My delegation would like to extend our appreciation to the delegation of Myanmar, a fellow ASEAN member, for its strong and continuous commitment in the promotion of democracy as well as its constructive and active engagement in the second cycle of the UPR.

In the same light, Indonesia also wishes to congratulate Myanmar’s success in holding a credible, transparent and democratic election in 2015, a historical moment which many of us could not imagine a decade ago.

Mr. President,

Indonesia takes note of Myanmar’s acceptance of our recommendation to continue the efforts to promote tolerance, harmony and respect of human rights among all communities in Myanmar, including through possible review of legal frameworks, human rights’ education and interfaith dialogues and cooperation involving all segments in the society.

We believe that through the implementation of such steps, Myanmar’s democratic progress can be maintained and further be consolidated.

We wish great success for Myanmar’s future endeavours in advancing democracy in its national setting.

Thank you.
