STATEMENT BY H.E. HASAN KLEIB, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA, AT THE ENHANCED INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH THE HIGH COMMISSIONER REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN THE PHILIPPINES 30 JULY 2020

July 7, 2020 Topics, Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues

Madame President,

I wish to thank the High Commissioner for her report.

While we note that several challenges remain relating to the human rights situation in the Philippines, including on the issue of extrajudicial killings, we welcome the Philippines’ recent steps to address those challenges.

We commend the Philippines’ constructive engagement and cooperation with the OHCHR, as reflected in the several rounds of exchanges between the Government and the OHCHR earlier this year.

Further, my delegation welcomes efforts by the Government of the Philippines in improving rule of law and accountability mechanisms at the national level, among others through the strengthening of human rights safeguards within its national legal framework.

Madame President,

Indonesia wishes to further encourage the Philippines’ commitment to continue in taking steps to further improve human rights situation on the ground. In this regard, we welcome the efforts of the Philippines to explore relevant areas of technical cooperation and institutional capacity building at the international level.

As a fellow member of ASEAN, Indonesia stands ready to continue working closely with the Philippines to further promote meaningful advancements in the field of human rights. Indonesia also calls upon the international community to continue its constructive cooperation with, and assistance to the Philippines.

I thank you.
